It is inevitable that companies will end up making a few mistakes; we help them correct these mistakes.

Intellectual property plays a vital role in Georgia’s quest to protect and foster creativity, innovation, and economic growth. As a nation that values and encourages entrepreneurship, Georgia recognizes the significance of these rights in cultivating a favorable business environment. They serve as the foundation for safeguarding original ideas, inventions, and artistic expressions, motivating individuals and organizations to invest in research and development. In this article, we will delve into the realm of intellectual property in Georgia, exploring its importance, legal framework, and more.

Safeguard your intellectual creations and innovations with robust protection in Georgia’s intellectual property landscape.

History

After gaining independence, Georgia prioritized the formation of a national system to protect creativity and innovation, as seen in the constitution and relevant legislation. Notably, Georgia established its national patent service, “Sakpatenti,” in 1992, which later became the National Intellectual Property Center. Sakpatenti’s mandate encompassed major areas of intellectual property, such as industrial property, copyright, related rights, and new plant varieties and animal breeds. Sakpatenti has placed significant emphasis on safeguarding the geographical indications of important Georgian products, particularly wines, and mineral waters, in foreign countries. To achieve this, Georgia joined the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration. It also engaged in bilateral negotiations with the CIS countries and the European Union to mutually recognize geographical indications. Currently, an agreement is already in effect between Georgia and the EU, and Georgian geographical indications have been registered and protected in several CIS countries.
